Another plant species has been discovered and officially recognized by the scientific community from material collected at the Vale Nature Reserve in Linhares in the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil). Machaerium jobimianum, popularly known by local people as “bico-branco” (“white beak”) was collected at the Vale Nature Reserve in 2001 by technicians who work there.
The description of the species, however, was only made this year, after a meticulous investigation carried out by researchers from the State University of Campinas and the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. These researchers also authored a published article that formalized the scientific discovery.
Even before its description was published, the name Machaerium jobimianum was chosen through a public poll to honor composer Antônio Carlos Jobim. This was part of the Immortal Brazilian Awards, launched by the company in 2008 with the aim of immortalizing personalities involved in the environmental movement by naming Atlantic Forest species discovered at the Vale Nature Reserve for them.
