Vale produces phosphate in Peru

Production at Bayóvar phosphate mine has now begun. Located in the province of Sechura in Peru, the Bayóvar Project is composed of a mine capable of producing 3.9 million metric tons per year, a phosphate concentration plant, a 32-kilometer road, a conveyor belt system and a maritime terminal.

The project became operational in mid-June. This is Vale’s first greenfield project in the phosphate market, helping to strengthen the company’s position in the fertilizer industry and increase supply in the Brazilian market.

US$566 million investment

The project, which has received total investment of US$566 million, was initiated in 2007, and has since had a positive impact on local communities. Since 2008, Vale has launched three training programs for the people of Sechura, and this has enabled more than 280 local professionals to be employed to work on the project’s mining, processing and port operations.

In the fertilizer sector, Vale is developing other phosphate projects in Peru and has potash ventures in Argentina and Canada. Read more about our main fertilizer projects.
