Located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ilha Guaíba Terminal (“Guaíba Island Terminal”) began operating in 1973. Connected to the MRS railroad, in which Vale owns a stake, it is now a leading private port handling ore iron extracted in the south of the state of Minas Gerais.
Ilha Guaíba Terminal is the third largest iron ore port in Brazil. Its facilities cover an area of 500,000 m2, the equivalent of 50 soccer fields.
A 1.7-km railroad bridge carries ore-laden trains from the mainland to the island, off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Ilha Guaíba Port also has a shipping channel 16,680 meters long, enabling large ships to access it.
