Estrada de Ferro Carajás

The Carajás Railroad (EFC) passenger train passes through 23 municipalities in the states of Maranhão and Pará. During the rainy season, it is the only working means of transport in some places.

In operation since 1986, the service carries around 1,100 people per day. As well as being safe and comfortable, the passenger train is an affordable travel option, with tickets up to 50% cheaper than bus fares.

The passenger train has economy and executive classes, as well as two buffet cars in high season and one in low season. There is also a baby changing room. In addition, the train is equipped with a first aid facility and an exclusive car for people using wheelchairs, those accompanying them, and people with reduced mobility. This car has air conditioning and a television.

The route

The train departs from the train station in São Luís, Maranhão, for Parauapebas, southeast Pará, on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, it makes the return journey. There is no service on Wednesdays, when the train’s locomotives and carriages undergo maintenance.

The table below shows key information about the EFC passenger train service: fares, times, stations and ticket sales points.
