Vale produces platinum group metals (PGMs) and other precious metals as byproducts of its nickel operations. Most of our PGM production takes place at our facilities in Port Colborne, Canada, while the processing occurs at our precious metals refinery in Acton, England.
Vale’s PGM output places it among the top three producers in the world, alongside companies in South Africa and Russia. We are also a leading producer of PGMs from secondary sources – in other words, recyclable materials. Accordingly, we ensure the responsible and efficient use of valuable raw materials.
Platinum group metals (PGMs)
The platinum group metals consist of the elements palladium, rhodium, ruthenium and iridium. They are used as catalysts and to make electronic components. Resistant to chemical reactions and wear and tear, they are also used along with precious metals to produce fine jewelry.
