A commitment to protecting the environment is fundamental to Vale’s business strategy. The pursuit of balance between socioeconomic regional development and maintaining the quality of natural resources, biodiversity and life lies at the heart of our actions.
Vale recognizes the importance of biodiversity and considers it to be an intrinsic theme for its business. The company plans actions to manage biodiversity in the regions where it operates, bringing together species and ecosystem conservation with operational activities.
We also have a series of voluntary actions, which we are conducting either alone or in partnership with environmental organizations and education and research institutions. In particular, we protect more than 10,000 km2 of natural habitat reserved for biodiversity conservation in Brazil, Canada, New Caledonia and Indonesia. These areas include company-owned sites and public conservation areas protected in partnership with local governments.
Our actions to integrate biodiversity with operational activities are focused on:
-
Understanding the areas where we operate.
-
Evaluating, preventing, controlling or minimizing the negative impacts and risks of operations for ecosystems and elements that make up local biodiversity.
-
Developing and improving technologies and procedures to restore degraded areas and conserve biodiversitye.
-
Investing in and encouraging biodiversity conservation.
