Monitoring of whales and dugongs (marine mammals of the same order as the manatee) is part of Vale’s environmental program in New Caledonia. The aim is to prevent ships and other vessels close to the Havannah and Woodin channels from interfering with the creatures’ breeding and other life cycle activities.
In association with NGO Opération Cétacés, we closely monitor the movements of mammals present in the area to reduce the risk of collisions. Ships are instructed to sail more slowly in areas around whale migration routes.
