In order to improve the quality of its activities, products and services and to maintain the strong environmental performance of its operations, Vale invests continuously in environmental restoration actions. To this end, we conduct research and we develop technologies and procedures.
Environmental restoration is a gradual process that demands medium- and long-term actions. The aim is to reverse changes to the environment, reestablishing essential functions of impacted ecosystems, especially through soil rehabilitation.
Our restoration programs cover areas altered by the company’s activities or by other human action, significant areas for the conservation of biodiversity, water resources and soils, and private properties with legally protected native vegetation. These initiatives take place not only on Vale’s own sites, but also on third parties’ land, in partnership with local farmers and governments.
Vale seeks to be at the vanguard of best practices in environmental restoration. Our company conducts research and development projects, often in partnership with research institutions, in order to select potential plant species for use in environmental rehabilitation.
