In 2011, a national campaign
organized by Vale helped victims of one of the worst natural disasters in the
history of Brazil.
Employees and suppliers collected eight metric tons of food, 8,000 liters of
drinking water, 6,000 food baskets and 500 cleaning kits for those affected by
storms that hit the highland region of Rio de Janeiro State.
Vale also
lent excavators, trucks, semi-trailers, shovels and bulldozers to remove debris
left over from the rains and landslides that left thousands of families without
shelter.
A Vale
Foundation fundraising initiative (for every R$1 deposited, R$2 was donated by
Vale) resulted in R$765,077 raised from the public and R$1,530,154.92
contributed by the company. A further R$68,271.50 was received from suppliers
and partner companies.
The Vale
Foundation assessed the available resources thoroughly to ensure that they
reached those most in need.
