Institute’s center will research sustainability

A rainwater recycling system, solar panels and advanced thermal insulation – these are some of the features of the building that will house the Vale Technology Institute (ITV) in the Amazon region, Brazil. The center’s main objective is to produce and spread innovative scientific knowledge by carrying out research into sustainable development.

The plans were presented to the scientific community and government authorities in the state of Pará on August 19th in the city of Belém. More than R$230 million will be invested in the building, its infrastructure and staff costs up to 2015.

Belém center the first to be built

The center in Belém, located close to the Science and Technology Park of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), will be home to an initial group of approximately 50 people, including researchers and administration staff. The building will be capable of accommodating a total of 400 professionals.

The center will consist of around 20 laboratories, a library, 15 classrooms, a canteen, a social area, an auditorium and a parking area. Besides the ITV building – the first ITV center to be built – Vale is constructing centers in Ouro Preto (Minas Gerais), which will specialize in mining, and São José dos Campos (São Paulo), which will focus on energy-related innovation.
