Over the next four years, Vale will invest around R$400 million to set up three technology research and postgraduate study centers in Brazil. The aim is to generate and spread innovative scientific knowledge through the Vale Technology Institute (ITV).
The first center, being built in Belém, Pará, will focus on sustainable development. The campus will have a sustainable design featuring reuse of water, solar energy and thermal insulation. The other centers, in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais and São José dos Campos, São Paulo, will research mining and energy, respectively.
Producing knowledge
Around 50 academics with doctorates or post-doctorates will conduct research and teach students at each center. The ITV centers are modeled on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), founded in 1985, with which Vale already has an exchange program for professors and students.
