As part of its sustainability policy, Vale is investing in programs to restore and conserve the environment. In 2010, for example, over 400 hectares of Atlantic Forest will be restored in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, as part of the Environmental Extension Program, a partnership between Vale and the state government.
The program aims to replant and restore forests in Permanent Preservation Areas located around lakes, lagoons, reservoirs, springs and rivers. Most of this work will take place on degraded pasture land on rural properties in the inland part of the state.
Initiative covers 32% of municipalities in Espírito Santo
By the end of this year, Vale will have donated approximately 800,000 saplings of native Atlantic Forest species to the program. These saplings are grown at the Vale Nature Reserve in Linhares, Espírito Santo.
When it was launched in 2009, the Environmental Extension Program covered just four municipalities. Since then, a further 25 municipalities across the state have joined the initiative, which will run until 2013.
