The Vale Museum is located in the city of Vila Velha in the state of Espírito Santo, in the restored and converted Pedro Nolasco train station, on the banks of Vitória Bay. The museum has two objectives: to preserve railroad history and to provide people with a high-quality space for contemporary art, encouraging young people to use their creativity in the pursuit of knowledge.
Besides bringing the past to life, the museum is investing in the future by providing art education programs, with contemporary exhibitions, workshops for university students and art workshops for children and teenagers.
The museum was opened on 15 October 1998. The museum hosts a permanent exhibition and Reminiscence Center on the Vitória-Minas Railroad (EFVM). A fantastic 34 m² model railroad, the largest in Brazil, features miniature moving trains, bridges and viaducts, factories and landscape details, showing how cargo is moved from mines to the port.
Outside the museum entrance there is a steam engine, which was built in Philadelphia, acquired by Vale in 1945 and restored in 1997. The museum’s permanent collection, which consists of 133 items (84 objects and 49 photographs) shows visitors railroad equipment, tools, documents and images from the past with the help of interactive screens.
