The Vale Train program is a structured set of cultural activities designed to promote the cultural and natural heritage of the historic Brazilian cities of Ouro Preto and Mariana, in the state of Minas Gerais. The program’s benefits extend far beyond the tracks, as it is an important source of jobs and income, helping to develop local tourism.
The journey from Mariana to Ouro Preto, which takes approximately 50 minutes, passes by the intermediate stations of Vitorino Dias and Passagem de Mariana. The region’s stunning natural landscape is the trip’s highlight for the 240 passengers as they travel along the 18 kilometer-railroad, restored by Vale in 2006.
The train stations carry out an extensive program of activities, including permanent and temporary ones, for the benefit of visitors and local residents alike. Train cars have been adapted to accommodate libraries and spaces for various activities. Restored station buildings house exhibitions that use fun, interactive means to tell the story of the railroad and the surrounding area.
Promoting cultural identity
The benefits of the project are not confined to the railroad, as the Vale Foundation conducts a range of activities to promote cultural and social inclusion among the region’s young people. Besides generating jobs and developing tourism, the most important legacy of the Vale Train is its contribution to building local identity.
