Traditional Communities

Comunidades Tradicionais

Our relationships with indigenous and quilombo communities (the latter are historic villages of descendants of escaped slaves) are influenced by our operations and based on continuous dialog and respect for local culture.

In order to strengthen these relationships, we are developing a training program to guide employees and contractors who have contact with these communities.

We are also producing guidelines for relationships with indigenous peoples. These documents will be based on our history of relations with communities close to our activities, the legislation of the countries where we operate and United Nations conventions and standards.

Respecting local people

With the support of government entities, universities and NGOs, in 2009 we carried out initiatives that benefited over 5,500 indigenous people in the states of Pará, Maranhão and Minas Gerais.
