Mining creates many benefits for the regions where it is present, such as new jobs, higher salary payments and family income, and greater tax revenue. Our key challenge is to identify opportunities and leave a positive, sustainable legacy in the regions where we operate.
Action promotes development
We develop programs, initiatives and projects to leverage the positive results of our presence. Our strategy is to work in an integrated manner with governments and society, stimulating the use of tax revenues to improve infrastructure, train workers and suppliers, and diversify the region’s economy.
In this way, we contribute to local development in the medium and long term. Our work with communities helps this model to remain in place even after our mining operations have ended.
Vocational training
We invest in vocational training programs related to mining and other activities in the local economy in order to help maximize the hiring of people living in the locations where we operate. Through these programs, Vale aims to contribute to job and income creation in local communities as well as diversification of their economies.
Community relations
Our community relations programs aim to establish participatory and ongoing dialog between the community and Vale. The programs include visits of local people to mines, meetings with community leaders and participatory forums. Our operations are assigned a Communications and Corporate Relations team throughout all project phases. We give special attention to traditional, indigenous and quilombo communities (the latter are historic communities of descendants of escaped slaves).
Cultural projects
We support projects and make agreements to restore cultural and archeological heritage in the locations where we operate, and we participate in programs to restore, promote and defend cultural assets of all kinds. In addition to these programs, the Vale Foundation works to promote human development in the communities where we are present, empowering people and respecting local cultural identities.
